Rachel’s family goes to the same church as we do – and we’ve been part of the same small group for a couple of years now. We thoroughly enjoy this family and were so excited to hear when they were expecting their third little one this summer!
Mom and I tried to connect a few times to schedule our session together and finally found a date – when baby Rachel was 3 weeks old. This is just a tad older than I like to photograph newborns, partly because by this time they have learned that they can stretch out and move around outside of mom’s cozy womb instead of staying all curled up. And, they’re starting to ‘wake up’ after those first couple weeks of life – and therefore don’t sleep as much as they once did. Even so, I was so excited to come and capture some images of this beautiful girl and her family! However, her big brother got the stomach flu the morning of the shoot, so we had to cancel! And then her big sister got sick too . . . and then, and then, and then . . . isn’t it amazing how quickly life gets away from us?? We did finally find a time to schedule a new session date – when baby girl was 5 weeks old!
When the day of the session arrived, it was a dreary and sort of chilly day – we thought perhaps we could get some of baby girl outside, but it was too cool and rain threatened the whole time. So, we stayed inside for the duration. While Rachel was still awake, I attempted to wrap her (which she did not like!) and got some shots with her proud siblings! It is so cute how much they adore her!
After the sibling shots, we moved locations to get some light, that was by this time of day better, and I worked with mom, which was helpful to get Rachel to calm down and relax a bit before working with baby alone. She did eventually fall asleep, but again, when babies are older, it’s much harder to get them to sleep through a session. Patience can really pay off though – as well as having a space heater and white noise playing! (I pulled out all the tricks ;)) I was able to get her in several positions and even change wraps and head coverings – but all in the basket I had started her in. As soon as I tried to switch her to a different place and get some cute naked baby shots, she decided she was done for the day. That’s ok though, because I still got some super-cute shots of a super-cute girl! See for yourself and let me know what you think! 🙂 And, if you’re interested in finding out more about scheduling your own newborn session, visit my Newborn page (and for a few more weeks, remember I’m running a pre-maternity leave special before I have my own little guy!)
