I finally did it – at 13.5 months I finally did a portrait session with my youngest! I have been trying since just before his first birthday, but either he was sick, I was sick, his siblings were sick, we were traveling, we had company, etc etc etc . . . you know how it goes! But, I did it! It was a random Saturday recently after he had taken a LONG morning nap and he was happy and his siblings were napping and my husband was home to help. Basically, all the stars aligned and we managed to get into the studio!
For most 1 year sessions we have time to not only do the smash session, but we can add other things in as well. Perhaps a splash after the smash or a family session to start us out. I opted to do a solo portrait session with him this time.
There are also a lot of options when I comes to doing smash sessions. Obviously there’s the cake smash session – this is a fun one where you have a gorgeous cake and the little one (hopefully) devours it in a very messy fashion. The cake can be made to match a theme or color scheme, so that can be awesome. My middle child had a cake that looked like a tree stump for a lumber jack theme 🙂 You can do something unrelated to food too (this can be a great option for those children with food allergies) like a paint session. He’ll get a blank canvas and several colors of paint and we’ll watch him go to town painting everything, including himself. And, as a bonus, you have something to hang on your wall that he made at the end of the session. What I opted to do with my own little man was a spaghetti smash! He loves to eat – and he loves to eat spaghetti, so this worked out really well for us (as you can see below).
